The Magical Magyars and Manchester United managers

Monday is the 60th anniversary of England's infamous 6-3 defeat by Hungary at Wembley. You might not expect the 'Magical Magyars' and former Manchester United managers Ron Atkinson and Tommy Docherty to have much in common, but they were actually all inspired by the same remarkable Englishman.

Jimmy Hogan was his name and he was a pioneering coach across Europe in the first half of the 20th Century.

His favoured tactics, which demanded versatility and the ability to pass the ball on what he always called "the carpet", were a forerunner of what would become known in the 1970s as 'Total Football' but he paid a heavy price back home for being a few decades ahead of his time, and was largely ignored.

PLAYER REACTION Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham

Manchester City midfielder Samir Nasri: "It was really good. We showed against a big squad that we always respond at home. You don't see 6-0 that often but we've maintained our good form at home. For me, all the goals were really nice; it's difficult to pick one. I'm not just happy about the performance, the goals and the way we played, but the clean sheet as well."

Paul in North London: Nothing has gone right in sport this weekend, but this is one of the worst Spurs performances I've ever seen. Toothless with the ball, no width, no sharpness, no-one running in behind. Our defence has been utterly embarrassed. How many times did we harmlessly pass across in front of Manchester City's back-four?!! Pathetic. I respect AVB as a manager and I'm not calling for his head... But how does he turn this around?

Richard Katz: (external) Wow. Imagine being an English cricket loving Spurs fan.

Cooke: (external) Spurs providing the comedy moment of the season. Did I hear 'title challenge' back in August?

Mike Hunkin: (external) I'm so glad that's over, we where horrendous today. Surely this will make AVB change things? He has to do something.

    Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham

While Spurs were dreadful today, Manchester City were scintillating. And in Sergio Aguero, they have the form player in the Premier League - it's 14 goals in his last 11 games for the club.

After the game the Argentine said: "We're very happy and now we want to continue in the same way."

Ali Kane in Glasgow: Barry and Paul Chuckle could have done a better job than Dawson and Kaboul at the back today.

THE STATS DON'T LIE Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham

Tottenham only had two shots fewer than Manchester City today but conceded with six of the 10 City had on target. Spurs had more possession and corners - but as the old cliche goes, there's only one stat which matters in football.

Patrick Treanor: (external) AVB looks stunned, can't blame him.

HOW IT STANDS Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham

That result moves Manchester City up to fourth in their table, above Southampton on goal difference. Tottenham actually drop a place below Newcastle after going from +3 to -3 on goal difference.

    Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham

Tottenham had conceded six goals in their 11 Premier League games before today. They doubled that tally in 90 minutes at Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham Former Man City midfielder Nigel Gleghorn on BBC Radio Manchester

"James Milner has picked a brilliant long pass. Jan Vertonghen has then had a nightmare trying to trap the ball, and it let in Jesus Navas.

"He has been criticised for his finishing, but that was so cool."

  13. 1522
GOAL Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham - Jesus Navas (90 mins)

The game finishes like it starts, with a Jesus Navas goal. Erik Lamela loses the ball at the other end with some attempted showboating and James Milner hits a long, probing ball that must travel 70 yards to Navas to fire home past Hugo Lloris.

  14. 1521
INJURY TIME Manchester City 5-0 Tottenham

Three more minutes of woe for Tottenham.

  15. 1518
Manchester City 5-0 Tottenham Former Man City midfielder Nigel Gleghorn on BBC Radio Manchester

"I do not think Tottenham have put a shift in. Manchester City have not even got really out of the blocks today, as at other times this season we have been truly unbelievable.

"If we had, we would have scored 10."

Shaun Hobbs: (external) I am a fan of AVB but today he has got it hugely wrong, no Townsend or Defoe at least coming off the bench. Bad choice AVB!

Thomas Rimer: (external) Re Danny from Bradford: Yes, but Rome weren't as toothless as Spurs.

Mayhook: (external) I for one enjoy watching what AVB is doing to Spurs, as do the rest of the Arsenal fans.

  17. 1517
    Manchester City 5-0 Tottenham

This almost has the feel of Manchester City's 6-1 win over United two years ago, you expect them to score every time they go forward

  18. 1513
Manchester City 5-0 Tottenham Former Man City midfielder Nigel Gleghorn on BBC Radio Manchester

"That was a finish of somebody who is not used to being so close to goal. I have not even seen Fernandinho take a shot from 30 yards before, and he badly mis-hit his shot from much closer in then."

  19. 1512
WHAT A MISS Manchester City 5-0 Tottenham

It should be six. The ball is played across to Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho, who is six yards out and unmarked, but he manages to kick the ball off his other leg and it goes out for a goal-kick.

That was almost Emmanuel Adebayor's moment for Tottenham but his shot is saved by Manchester City goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon.
